Sound is an important tool in a film’s storytelling. It helps your audience know where they are and how they should be feeling. It can be used to convey a mood in a scene and manipulate your audience’s emotions. It’s an integral component that is considered from start to finish, beginning with the script and production and ending in the final mix.
In some ways it can be thought of like making a song. It begins with the timing of a basic track of dialog and ends with a combination of sounds delicately woven together, with proper space given to all instruments. It is a collaboration of concepts and ideas, talents and sounds. It's a group effort. It requires a true love for the art and intimate knowledge of the science.
As the Sound Designer, I consider all sounds in the soundtrack, not only sound effects.
As your Supervising Sound Editor, these sounds become part of my palette to design your soundtrack.
